A new commemorative crosswalk was unveiled in Kelowna on Wednesday, Aug. 27, to honour Canadian veterans past and present.

A crosswalk in downtown Kelowna has been beautified with a commemoration to Canadian veterans.

The city, in partnership with the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 26, launched the crosswalk on Wednesday, Aug. 27.

"This crosswalk will serve as a daily reminder of the courage and sacrifice of veterans past and present," said Mayor Tom Dyas. "To our veterans: on behalf of myself, council, and the residents of Kelowna, I extend our deepest gratitude. Your sacrifices have secured the freedoms we enjoy today. We will never take them for granted."

Located at the intersection of Lawrence Ave and Abbott St. (near the entrance of Veendam Gardens beside the cenotaph), the crosswalk is emblazoned with two Canadian maple leaves and the phrase "In honour of those who served and sacrificed" in English and French.

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 26 will be celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2026, and the crosswalk will serve as a "lasting symbol of remembrance in the heart of our city."
