Collision into pole on Yale Road led to arrest on Aug. 24, 2025 in Chilliwack, police say.

A power outage in Chilliwack was caused by a vehicle crash into a power pole Sunday (Aug. 24) night that later saw the driver arrested.

Chilliwack RCMP said a Chilliwack woman, 50, the lone occupant and driver, was arrested after trying to run from the scene of the Yale Road crash.

"She did try to flee after the collision and was followed by witnesses who were able to direct responding officers to where she was," said Chilliwack RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Alexandra Mulvihill.

"The female was arrested, and after refusing to provide a breath sample was charged with refusal under the provincial immediate roadside prohibition process."

In B.C. refusing a lawful demand by an officer to provide a breath sample is a Criminal Code offence.

Refusing or failing to blow leads to an immediate roadside prohibition from driving with several penalties, including a 90-day prohibition, a 30-day vehicle impoundment and towing, a $500 fine, and a permanent criminal record should officers pursue criminal charges.

The report about a single-vehicle crash was called in to police at 8:17 p.m. on Sunday night, the officer said.

Police say the driver did not have a record of impaired driving.

BC Hydro and flaggers attended the scene and power was restored later that night.
