Surrey police are looking for witnesses in a late-night hit-and-run that injured a 14-year-old boy in Surrey Sunday night.
Shortly after 10 p.m. on Sunday (June 22), Surrey Police Service frontline officers were called to a report of a hit-and-run collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian at the intersection of Old Yale Road and Mall Access, between Holland Park and Central City Mall, an SPS release said.
Officers arrived to find a 14-year-old boy had been struck by a vehicle that had fled the scene; the teen was transported to hospital by BC Emergency Health Services with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police found the vehicle later, driving near 104 Avenue and Whalley Boulevard, at approximately 2:15 a.m., the release noted.
The driver was arrested for both impaired driving and failing to remain at the scene of a collision, police said.
The investigation remains in its early stages and no charges have been laid.
Surrey Police Service is asking any witnesses to the collision, or anyone who may have any information, including CCTV or dashcam footage, to call SPS at 604-599-0502 and quote file 2025-51543 (SP).
While at least one social media post suggested the boy was attending the halal festival in Surrey, and suggested the hit-and-run was deliberate, SPS Staff Sgt. and senior media relations officer Lindsey Houghton said that was not the case Monday morning (June 23).
"We are very confident that the collision has nothing to do with the festival other than pure coincidence," Houghton said.
