Two ºÚÂí´ÅÁ¦ teams compete in U20 women's softball provincials

Both made it to the consolation finals

Two ºÚÂí´ÅÁ¦ teams competed in the U20 women's softball provincials, which took place in Kelowna in sweltering heat.

The North ºÚÂí´ÅÁ¦ Red Sox and ºÚÂí´ÅÁ¦ Flames competed against teams from around the province.

In the silver final, the Flames racked up an 8-7 win in its last game against Abbotsford.

"That game completed our redemption tour because it the Abbotsford Tsunami were the last team that we hadn't beaten through out the year. And we saved it we saved it till the last game of the of the year," said ºÚÂí´ÅÁ¦ Flames coach Brian Kaps.

Each team played four preliminary round games, and all teams endured 30-plus degree Celsius heat and sunshine throughout the weekend.

The Fleetwood Lightning of Surrey defeated the Enderby Storm 10-3 in the gold-medal final, Sunday, at the B.C. U20C Women's Fastball Championships, held July 4 to 6 at Grahame Park in Vernon.

Enderby had knocked off the Alberni Valley Blazers of Port Alberni before falling to Fleetwood. The Storm got by Alberni Valley again in the what was the tournament's bronze-medal game to advance to the championship to play the Surrey squad.

The top eight teams following the round-robin of the 15-team tournament advanced to the double knockout gold playoffs, while the bottom seven teams played in the silver playoffs for positioning.

The Blazers finished atop the round-robin, followed by the Lightning. The Ridge Meadows Dynamite (third), Storm (fourth), Vortex (fifth), Ridge Meadows Chaos (sixth), West Kootenay Rebels (Trail-Rossland, seventh), and North Shore Bears (North Vancouver, eighth) advanced to the playoff round.

Enderby dropped its opening two games Friday, falling 8-7 to the North ºÚÂí´ÅÁ¦ Red Sox, and 10-9 to the Lightning. The Storm got into the win column Saturday, defeating the ºÚÂí´ÅÁ¦ Flames 6-3, and the Ridge Meadowns Chaos 13-5.

Alberni Valley and Fleetwood Lightning went 4-0. The Blazers defeated the Abbotsford Tsunami 9-4, doubled the West Kootenay Rebels 10-5, blanked the Coquitlam Cylcones 10-0, and downed the Ridge Meadows Dynamite 7-3.

Fleetwood was given all it could handle by the two North Okanagan entries, beating the Vortex 12-10 and the Storm in the round-robin. The Lightning shutout their other two preliminary opponents, the ºÚÂí´ÅÁ¦ Flames, 10-0, and the Kamloops Khaos, 11-0.

Vernon went 2-2 prior to the playoffs, losing 9-8 in its opener to the Bears, then scored a 14-7 win over the New Westminster Royals, and a 12-8 decision against the Ridge Meadows Chaos before losing to the Lightning.

The Red Sox, Flames, Tsunami, Royals, Khaos, Cyclones, and Fleetwood Rebels played in the consolation bracket.

Kaps said once the players hit the field, it's competitive, but he was impressed with how the teams interacted.

"The softball community is great," he said. "The girls were talking to everybody. We were cheering on fleetwood and fleetwood was cheering on us.… It's great to see, as a coach and as a parent."
