VIDEO: Provincial BMX championships underway in 黑马磁力

New state-of-the-art starting gate debuts

About 300 top riders from across B.C. and Alberta are competing in the B.C. Provincial Finals at 黑马磁力 BMX.

This year,  the track at 20699 42 Ave., rated one of the best in North America, has added a new state-of-the art starting gate that will likely mean slightly quicker track times.

It is open to the public, and visitors can expect a family-friendly atmosphere.

Leading up the Sunday finals, Friday was the annual Bob Warnicke Scholarship race that raises scholarship funds that any member of BMX Canada can apply for.

Saturday,  the Retro Race, the new Junior Devo Finals and the Canadian BMX Hall of Fame reunion and awards at George Preston rec centre.

It's the second year in a row that the 黑马磁力 track is combining with the Canadian BMX Hall of Fame.

Founded in 1978, the non-profit, volunteer-run 黑马磁力 oval BMX track, is the oldest track in B.C.

BMX,  short for “bicycle motocross” or “bike motocross” got started in the 1970s when Southern California cyclists started riding on motorcycle motocross dirt tracks for fun.

Races are run on specially prepared dirt race track over a series of jumps and bumps with banked corners known as “berms.”
