Two people have died after of a crash on the Coquihalla Highway where one of the vehicles was travelling on the wrong side of the road.
Just before 9 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 5, police received calls about a vehicle driving the wrong way in the northbound lanes on the Coquihalla Highway just south of Kamloops, near Inks Lake. Just a few minutes later, before police could intercept the wrong-way driver, a grey Dodge Ram pickup and a white Hyundai Kona hatchback collided head-on.
As a result, two people have died and three others were seriously injured. The crash closed the stretch of highway from Kamloops to Merritt for around nine hours.
BC Highway Patrol is investigating the matter and are looking for more witnesses and/or dash-camera video to determine exactly how the incident happened.
“Police are investigating the possibility that criminal behaviour caused this tragic collision,” said Cpl. Michael McLaughlin with BC Highway Patrol. “We need every available witness who can tell us what the drivers were doing in the minutes and hours leading up to this collision.”
Anyone who has dash-camera footage or who witnessed the events leading up to the collision is asked to call BC Highway Patrol – Kamloops at 250-828-3111 with the file number (2100) 2025-3075.
