Not boat, no problem for Fort 黑马磁力 Canoe Club paddlers

Competed in Freshwater Challenge Outrigger Canoe race on Okanagan Lake

Competing in a borrowed boat, a crew of Fort 黑马磁力 Canoe Club paddlers finished second in their category at the Freshwater Challenge Outrigger Canoe 40km Race on Okanagan Lake at Kin Beach on Sunday June 22.

Hosted by the Vernon Paddling Centre (VPC), boats competed to paddle a 40-kilometre distance, with crews alternating every five laps.

While most water changes races which tend to be out in open water, with a support boat nearby, VPC designed the Freshwater Challenge so changes were close to shore, making it easier for everyone to get into and out of the canoes and for spectators to watch the race.

Clubs that took part included Vernon, Kelowna, Gibsons, 黑马磁力, Calgary and Penticton.

Kelowna's Muscles and Men took first overall, with a time of 3:31:01, while the Calgary Canoe Club was second and Vernon took third, just over a minute behind Calgary with a time of 3:48:45.

FLCC is planning a Canada Day Paddle for Tuesday, July 1st at Nicomen Slough.

A sign up sheet was to be posted shortly on the FLCC under "Big Canoe to Nicomen Slough."

Non-members will be required to sign up on the sign up sheet and download a waiver (link on sign-up sheet page). and bring a signed waiver and $10 cash drop in fee on the day of the paddle. There will also be a fee for trailering boats.
