Metro Vancouver Transit Police say an 18-year-old man was arrested after allegedly assaulting a middle school student on a bus.
The 13-year-old middle school student and other students boarded a bus along 8th Avenue in New Westminster on June 19, around 3:30 p.m., on their way home. A few stops later, the 13-year-old student stood up to exit the bus and accidentally bumped into an 18-year-old with his backpack, according to a news release from transit police on Thursday, June 26.
Police said the man then allegedly grabbed the student by the throat and punched them multiple times.
The suspect and the student then exited the bus at different stops.
Metro Vancouver Transit Police received multiple calls and text messages from other students on the bus, which police said had helped to identify the suspect.
He was arrested the following day and has since been released with conditions, pending his next court date.
Police said officers are working closely with school administration to address concerns regarding student safety while taking transit.
鈥淭ransit Police would like to thank the young witnesses who came forward, supported by their parents, to share their information with officers," Constable Amanda Steed said in the news release. "We understand that it can be difficult to recount something deeply upsetting that a person has experienced or witnessed, and would like to commend these students for finding the courage to do so."
In an email to parents and guardians on June 20, the school's principal said staff are aware of the altercation. The emails added that counselling support is in place for students at the school.
