Dear Editor,

[Re: MLA no longer a councillor, 黑马磁力, June 4]

Once again, we read of a politician who has jumped ship, this time from Municipal to Provincial. This is insulting to the voters who believed enough of Ms. Van Popta鈥檚 rhetoric to cast their vote for her first at the municipal level and then to all Township of 黑马磁力 residents. You might well ask my reasoning in this matter.

Let me expound. This tale starts with a local politician asking voters to support her. So far so good, but the issue quickly becomes more complex when that politician decides she does not really want to be a lowly public servant at the municipal level and sets her sight on the next level up, that of becoming a humble servant at the provincial level.

In a laughable twist she declares to one and all she can manage both positions equally well. It has been said that you can not serve two masters at once.

Have any laws been broken? No, of course, they were not. Thankfully that has now been reviewed and changed by the Legislature.

So, the voters who supported her at the municipal level are left to wonder if she truly stands behind her word and will any other local politician declare their voice to fill the gap.

The result of this nonsense is that those who voted for her as councillor are left without one who pledged to work on their behalf. So now the Township must foot a bill nearing $500,000 for a byelection. That is unfair to her supporters at the local level but also all Township residents who ultimately must pay the bill for her folly.
