The Sam Roberts Band has been announced as the headliner for a Downtown Maple Ridge festival in September.

Canadian singer and six-time Juno winner Sam Roberts will be the headliner for the Our Neck of the Woods festival, set for Sept. 6 in Maple Ridge.

The free all-day festival is being billed as an "all-day celebration of music, community, and local culture." It builds on the success of last year's 150th anniversary celebration of the same name, that featured The Strumbellas.

Sam Roberts is known for hits Brother Down, Don't Walk Away Eileen, and Hard Road.

The $350,000 budget for this year's festival has sparked some controversy, with other local organizers saying their events could be enlivened using just a portion of the spend on Our Neck of the Woods.

The city intends the festival to transform the downtown core into a "vibrant, walkable entertainment district."

There will be two stages, food trucks, a family fun zone, and licensed areas. An estimated 15,000 locals and visitors from neighbouring communities attended last year.

鈥淥ur Neck of the Woods is fast becoming one of the region鈥檚 premier events, and we鈥檙e bringing it back by popular demand after the huge success of last year鈥檚 event,鈥 said Mayor Dan Ruimy.

鈥淲e鈥檙e excited to welcome Sam Roberts Band and visitors to show off the bold energy and spirit of Maple Ridge. We are grateful to our sponsors and partners for helping make it happen.鈥

The Alouette Stage will featuring regional entertainers and local favourites, where will be a walkable car-free zone on 224 Street in partnership with TransLink.

Further event details, musical acts, and entertainers will be announced at the end of July.
