Harrison Lake's lagoon is now safe for swimming again, according to village officials.
A statement from the village released on Thursday, June 19, said that three samples taken from Harrison Lake lagoon have shown acceptable readings of E.Coli bacteria after the beach and lagoon had been closed to the public for three days.
The updated samples have not been posted to Fraser Health's beach conditions website as of early Thursday afternoon. While the village's advisory has been lifted, there is no indication yet of Fraser Health's advisory against swimming in the lagoon being lifted yet.
A water sample report from Fraser Health dated June 13 indicated an extremely high level of E. Coli bacteria, approximately 60 times higher than the safe limit threshold.
The lagoon typically has higher concentrations of E. Coli bacteria during the dry months and later in the summer. The most common source for the bacteria is feces of the Canada goose.
Fraser Health advises that those who swim in untreated recreational waters should avoid ingesting the water and that young, elderly or immunocompromised individuals may be at a greater risk of developing an infection.
Symptoms of an E. Coli infection include nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. If you experience these symptoms, please seek medical attention.
