A police dog assisting with an arrest in Surrey on Monday is recovering after suffering minor injuries during the early-morning incident.
According to a news release, Lotto 鈥 with the Lower Mainland District Integrated Police Dog Service 鈥 was allegedly slashed after tracking a suspect into a wooded area in the 16900-block of 86A Avenue.
He and his handler had been dispatched to the scene shortly before 6:30 a.m. Aug. 4 to assist members of the RCMP Surrey Provincial Operations Support Unit, who were looking for two suspects in connection with a theft from a vehicle.
Officers set up a perimeter to contain the pair, who had fled the scene.
Lotto 鈥 featured in an online in April 2024 鈥 was injured during the arrest, the release states. He recovered a knife as well as other property, it continues.
Officers arrested a second suspect nearby. Both suspects were released on undertakings while the investigation continues.
Lotto 鈥 whose profile indicates he works explosive detection and tactical troop, and loves playing fetch with his handler Const. Bryan Bradshaw 鈥 was taken to a veterinary clinic for examination and treatment, and is now recovering, the release states.
Staff Sgt. Derek King noted police service dogs often work in "unpredictable and dangerous situations,鈥 and when one is injured, "it affects us all."
"Their health and well-being are a priority, and we are happy to share that PSD Lotto is resting at home and expected to make a full recovery,鈥 the unit commander added.
Surrey Police Service Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton said Surrey officers are thankful Lotto's injuries weren't more serious.
"We hope he recovers quickly and is back on the streets soon to help keep us all safe.鈥
