A longtime minor football coach in White Rock and South Surrey has been a rock and a mentor for so many of the kids he's coached over the years.
Now, a former football player who is currently also, a coach, is hoping the community can help give John Martins a leg up, so to speak, after he had to have one of his legs amputated in June, after experiencing health issues for several years.
John Regan has started up a GoFundMe for his mentor, Martins, who must now adjust to a completely different lifestyle.
Martins is "an incredible man, a loving father, a devoted grandfather, and a selfless coach who has impacted countless lives," the GoFundMe page says. "John Martins has given so much of himself to his family, his community, and the sport of football, and now he needs our support."
While Martins' insurance covers $1,000 and an additional $1,000 from War Amps, the cost of a prosthetic leg is estimated to be between $15,000-$20,000, the GoFundMe notes.
As well, Martins' home is not yet equipped to accommodate his new physical needs, and major renovations are required to install ramps for the front and back stairs of his house, as well as a raised bed on the main floor. Rails for the stairs must also be added, and a bathtub needs to be converted into a walk-in shower, estimated at $8,000 to $15,000.
In addition, there will also be ongoing rehabilitation and medications costs to cover as well as simply, keeping up with normal life expenses.
With a coaching career of decades punctuated with several awards and accolades, Regan said it's hard to see his former coach, friend and mentor struggle to afford necessities and face such overwhelming costs in addition to aa whole new way of life after his leg amputation.
"He's just a really special guy ... all he's ever done is give to everybody else," Regan said.
"Even thoughts and prayers, or sharing the page for those that can't afford to donate helps," he added. "I know everybody has different financial situations. Even just a little bit goes a long way, and anything people are able to give is so appreciated."
While one ramp has been completed, and 35 per cent of the $18,000 has been reached, Regan is still hopeful the community will show up for someone who's been such a staple in minor football and in the local community, for so long.
"Every donation, no matter how small, will make a difference," the states.
