UPDATE: Highway 17 reopens after major crash near Tsawwassen ferry

DriveBC reports highway now open between Salish Sea Drive and Tsawwassen Drive

Highway 17 has reopened in both directions after a major crash in Tsawwassen left one person with serious injuries and snarled traffic around the BC Ferries terminal for several hours.

The collision between a motorcycle and an SUV happened around 11:13 a.m. on July 12.

"The motorcycle rider was taken to hospital with what are believed to be serious, life-altering injuries. The driver of the SUV remained on scene and was not injured in the collision," RCMP stated in a press release.

The crash initially closed the highway between Salish Sea Drive and Tsawwassen Drive, while Delta Police erouted traffic onto Tsawwassen Drive and asked motorists to avoid the area.

DriveBC reported shortly after 6 p.m. that both lanes of Highway 17 have now been reopened.

The forensic collision reconstructionist with the Lower Mainland Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service (LMD-ICARS) is investigating the crash.

"Factors that may have contributed to the collision are under investigation," police stated.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or who has dashcam footage taken near Highway 17 and Tsawwassen Drive between 11:10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 12 is asked to reach out to BC Highway Patrol 604-526-9744. Quote file number 2025-1217.
