The Chilliwack Coliseum is soon playing host to 152 hockey players competing to represent the province of British Columbia at bigger events later this year.
BC Hockey recently announced that the Coliseum welcomes Program of Excellence provincial camps for female U18 and male U16 from July 24 to 27 to determine B.C. teams at the 2025 U18 Women's National Championship and the 2025 WHL Cup.
The camps bring together many of the top young hockey players from B.C. and Yukon. The Women鈥檚 U18 Camp will feature 76 of the best players born between 2008 and 2011, while the Men鈥檚 U16 Camp will spotlight 76 of the top players born in 2010.
The women will battle for a spot at the 2025 U18 Women's National Championship, which runs from Nov. 2 to 8 in Mount Pearl and Conception Bay South, Nfld. Meanwhile, the Men鈥檚 U16 program will build toward the 2025 WHL Cup, with dates and location to be announced in the coming months.
The women will be split into four different groups and Fraser Valley invitees include: Madelyn Dominato (Abbotsford) and Saysha Brace (Chilliwack). BC Hockey's Program of Excellence is a platform for athletes from British Columbia and Yukon who have attained an elite level within the sport. The program is highlighted by the aforementioned two teams who participate in annual tournaments. Every four years these teams also participate in the Canada Winter Games. The POE program begins for females at the U12 age group and for males at the U15 age group.
Alumni of the female program include: Hannah Miller (PWHL's Toronto Sceptres and now Vancouver) and Micah Zandree-Hart (PWHL's New York Sirens). Male alumni consist of: Matthew Barzal (New York Islanders), Sam Reinhart (Florida Panthers) and Shea Theodore (Vegas Golden Knights).
The program, which has now been around for more than 20 years, has developed from a single summer camp to a complete system of identifying players and staff in every corner of the province for their possible inclusion in a series of training components.
