VIDEO: Car fans congregate at a more private Aldergrove show

Follow-up to public show by MG and Jaguar clubs in 黑马磁力 City

Ian Newby was giving directions to his Aldergrove property, where the Goodwood Revival car show for MG and Jaguar cars was being held on Sunday, Aug. 24.

"Look for the Centurion tank," Newby told a prospective visitor.

And there it was, on an idle side road just off Fraser Hwy, parked behind a fence next to the entrance to the car show site. The British-built Main Battle Tank belongs to the car fan's other notable field of interest, his Western Museum of the Armed Forces, devoted to the preservation and exhibit of vehicles and equipment used by the Canadian military.

Just to the north of the museum compound was where the car show was being held.

It was the day after the Canadian XK Jaguar Register and Canadian Classic MG Club (both founded by Newby) had held their 54th car show in 黑马磁力 City's Douglas Park, featuring displays of MGs, Jaguars, Land Rovers along with other British Cars and Motorcycles.

After the public exhibition, the Goodwood event was an opportunity for knowledgeable car fans to get together.

"We've got 200 members at any given time," Newby explained.

"We had 89 cars out in 黑马磁力 yesterday and we've got way more than that here today. This is the wind-down day."

Its name refers to the Goodwood Circuit, a historic venue for two- and four-wheeled motorsport in the United Kingdom.

Newby estimated turnout at about 250 people, the fourth year the after-show has been hosted at his Aldergrove location.

In his shop, a classic car with a Jaguar hood ornament and a massive 12-cylinder engine was nearing the end of a lengthy restoration that started with "everything on it seized, including the engine,"  and ending with it expected to be back on the road in a few weeks.

"This cropped up at Able Auctions in 黑马磁力 about six or seven years ago now," Newby recalled. "We went down and we were going to buy a forklift. I saw this and I said to [my wife] Doreen, forget the forklift, this car is going home with us.'

"Just rebuilt the transmission and we have every reason to believe it will run and move," Newby estimated. "We're not so sure about stopping [with the brakes it has], but we have all winter to play with it."

Visitors to the Sunday event were able to tour the military museum where the Centurion was parked. Under the name International Movie Services, the facility has become a provider of props for movie and TV shoots, which helps Newby pay for the acquisition and maintenance of the vehicles and equipment in his collection.
