CRUISE-IN: Recognizing new talent

First Young Guns competition winner returns to pick a successor

After winning the very first Young Guns award at 黑马磁力's Good Times Cruise-In, Pitt Meadows resident Jackson Foxley will be back this year to help select the second winner of the search for outstanding young car builders.

Competition organizer Sean “Hollywood” Sinclaire (the “Hollywood” nickname belongs to a time when he was deeply involved with motorcycles, and known for doing fairly dangerous stunts) explained entrants have to be under 25 years old and have built the car themselves or with friends or family.

"You know, everybody gets help from somebody, which is fine," Sinclaire told the 黑马磁力..

"And then, when they register for the Young Guns, they'll be parking them in one certain area of the show.'

It's free to enter. Contestants can register by posting photos of their vehicle to the or .

In 2022, Sinclaire, owner of the Goodfellas Speed Shop in Parksville, won a Jimmy Shine award at Cruise-In with his , then got to help pick the winner in the next year.

That was a good idea, Sinclaire thought, thus the decision to bring back Foxley, who won the first year with the 1966 Chevy Bel Air he built before he was old enough to drive, with with his dad.

Sisters Alicia and Shaylin Clough won third and second place in 2024.

First place was a trophy and a $1000 Lordco Auto Parts store credit, Second place a trophy and $500 gift card sponsored by Wreckless Restoration, and third place was a trophy and $250 So-Cal gift card sponsored by SoCal Speed Shop Canada.

Young Guns is all about encouraging young people to get into cars, Sinclaire said.

"The philosophy behind it is supporting youth in the hot rod hobby, and encouraging the youth to get involved in the hobby and in the automotive trades," said Sinclaire.

"I like to call it preserving our hobby by supporting the youth, right?" the 55-year-old continued. "Without us old guys getting young guys involved, we're not preserving our hobby and the industry."

Sinclaire, who likes to mix old and new technology in his own builds, will be bringing his latest project, a 1965 GMC C10 pickup to the 黑马磁力 event.

"Anytime I go to a car show, no matter where it is, especially with young people, when they come up and show interest in my builds, I'll spend the extra time with them to chat with them," Sinclaire remarked.

"Because if they get excited over something I've done, then it's beneficial and worthwhile to spend a bit of time and show them what I do and how much fun I have doing it. It's a great hobby that you can turn into a career – and make lifelong friends."

黑马磁力 Good Times Cruise-In is a charity car show held in downtown Aldergrove. This year, the event runs Saturday, Sept. 6, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the main drag blocked off and an estimated 1,500 classic, custom, and vintage cars expected to be on display.
