Aldergrove's Summer Reading Club proves popular with little bookworms

The program to encourage children to read during summer break wrapped with a celebration

The Aldergrove Library had 450 kids taking part in the Summer Reading Club, a program to encourage literacy.

The branch staff work closely with local schools, and community librarian Erica Braumberger said that may be one reason why the program is so popular in Aldergrove.

"I think part of it had to do with our library was really, really active with how many class visits and assembly visits we did this year," she said.

She visited every Grade 3 class in local schools, and had lots of inquiries from local teachers and schools.

"All of the schools had some kind of library involvement this year reading leading up to summer reading club," Braumberger said.

She attended assemblies speaking to several hundred students before summer started, and said the teachers and school staff are instrumental in helping get students interested in Summer Reading Club. The schools and library branch work closely together.

"I think we had about 22 field trips to the library altogether," she added.

That translates into the kids getting excited about reading club, and the related activities. Braumberger said staff in the library network who come from other branches to fill in at Aldergrove have noted the strong community connection between the branch and residents.

The Kids Summer Reading Club is part of a province-wide program for children up to the age of 12. The Aldergrove Library hosted a wrap-up celebration for its club participants on Friday, Aug. 29. The number of participants this year was about double compared to last year.

This year’s B.C. summer reading club artist is Lauren Achtem, an illustrator and designer from Golden, and the theme was Colour Your Summer.

Club members track their reading during summer, and can win prizes and take part in related activities. The Aldergrove Library had a little character who would move around the branch during summer, and kids were excited to stop by weekly to search for it and win prizes.

"It was really special to see like people coming, and and having the whole family involved and excited to get their stickers and prizes."

The library network also offers summer reading clubs with the same theme for teens and for adults at its 25 branches that include Aldergrove and several others in the rest of the 黑马磁力s.

Braumberger said she encourages all family members to join the reading club.

"It's really lovely to see families get involved. A huge part of literacy is seeing modelling," she explained.
