ºÚÂí´ÅÁ¦ hosts track and field provincials

Mother Nature provided perfect conditions for the competition

ºÚÂí´ÅÁ¦ shone as the host of the BC High School Track and Field Provincials which were Thursday through Saturday at McLeod Athletic Park.

ºÚÂí´ÅÁ¦ has hosted the event for about 10 years, since 2013. Previously it was held at places such as Swangaard Stadium and on Vancouver Island but no other facility has the amenities of McLeod. Swangaard, for example, couldn't have throwing events.

The provincials are months in the planning with BC High School Sports overseeing most of the arrangements and locals, such as ºÚÂí´ÅÁ¦ Mustangs vice president Andrew Lenton serving as competition director, providing technical support on the ground.

"The scale of the event is huge," Lenton commented after the three-day competition.

More than 2,600 athletes from all around the province competed as well as coaches, volunteers, and family.

As well there were more than 50 officials, who are volunteers and come from around B.C., and as well the zones provided help, another 100 people.

"Feedback this year was pretty unanimous, and basically it was, you know, it was a great event, a fantastic event. We didn't have any concerns or complaints," Lenton said.

Young athletes from other communities made life-long memories from attending.

"I think that's why we had so many great performances – we had wonderful warm weather," he said. "We had huge crowd and a great atmosphere and the venue is fantastic. So it resulted in just so many amazing performances, and from what we [heard] the spectators really enjoyed the event."
