LETTER: Young worker safety video earns senior's kudos

Writer's brother died on his first day on the job at an industrial site

Dear Editor,

[Re: 黑马磁力 student's autobody shop video drives home message about worker safety, langleyadvancetimes.com, June 12]

I was exceptionally thrilled with the shop safety film. This work is nothing short of brilliant from my perspective, as having been the third professional electrical engineer in my family. I worked supervising construction at the largest power plant and the largest open pit mine in Alberta.

Safety had always been a main focus in our family, as my dad was my Scout master and mentor growing up.

My youngest brother, however, was killed on his first day of work at 18 years of age while working at one of the largest gas plants in Alberta. My mother (94 years young) is still suffering from our loss. You never know whose fingers or life you will save just by speaking up.

I have learned through all my 49-plus years of working in various parts of industry that accidents are almost always a series shortcuts that workers get away with most of time, until they all line up and somebody gets hurt. There are no shortcuts in life. My Dad always said "If you are going to something, do it right the first time."

I am currently 72 years old and I am working part-time as a licensed security professional. I am still looking out for my safety and the safety of others around me.

All of you (and I include your wonderful teacher, as well) please keep up the great work you have started.

James Wesley Johnston, Chilliwack
