A head-on crash on Lougheed Highway near the Maple Ridge-Mission border sent four people to hospital Sunday morning (May 11).
One passenger, a 63-year-old Mission woman, was in critical condition.
Crews responded to the two vehicle collision just east of 287th St. shortly before 9:30 a.m.
According to a Mission RCMP news release, a 2002 Ford Focus hatchback westbound on the highway lost control and entered the oncoming lanes, striking a grey Mazda head-on.
鈥淚mpairment is not believed to have been a factor in the crash, although investigators are still working to determine what factors contributed to the collision. One report indicates the red Ford may have been cut-off by a grey van driving westbound on Lougheed Highway,鈥 the detachment said.
Police say the driver and passenger of the Mazda, and the driver of the Ford were taken to hospital with various injuries, while the 63-year-old Ford passenger suffered serious injuries.
Mission Fire reported multiple patients with entrapment. The Jaws of Life and other equipment were needed to free the victims.
Mission RCMP鈥檚 traffic services unit and the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service attended to investigate the crash.
The eastbound lanes of Lougheed Highway were closed throughout most of the day, but have since reopened.
