Surrey firefighters battle blaze at Cloverdale home

No one injured in two-alarm Clayton fire

Surrey firefighters were busy battling a blaze at a Cloverdale home Monday night.

Just before 9 p.m. Monday (June 2), crews were called to a residential structure fire in the 18000-block of 66 Avenue, Surrey Fire Service assistant chief of operations Greg McRobbie said Tuesday.

"When crews arrived â€” we sent five fire trucks to start, and when they arrived, they quickly upgraded it to a second alarm, bringing two more aerial trucks in," McRobbie noted.

"When crews arrived, (a parked) car was on fire and the whole front of the house ... the garage in front of the house was fully involved, spreading to the second floor and through the roof of basically, a two-storey with a basement residential house."

There were no injuires, and everyone — five people from the main home and at least one person in the basement suite — were able to get out safely, McRobbie added.

Firefighters were able to contain the major damage to the one home, he continued.

"A big concern is neighbouring houses in those situations ... crews battled quickly to get the initial fire out, and at the same time, were deploying trucks on 67 Avenue behind and setting lines out to protect the other houses," McRobbie said. "It's pretty amazing that there was damage to the other houses, but the residents were actually able to move back in — there was no damage inside, and (crews) were able to keep the fire contained to that one building."

Twenty-eight firefighters, seven fire trucks and two command vehicles attended the blaze.

While some on scene speculated the electric car charging in the driveway likely started the fire, McRobbie could not speculate on the cause.

"We won't speculate at this time ... that's what the investigation will try to figure out this morning."
