A man is in custody after he rammed a police vehicle and three other cars in Chilliwack during the early morning hours of Friday.
It was around 3 a.m. on May 16 when a police officer saw the driver of a blue BMW exhibiting signs of impaired driving near the intersection of Yale Road and Hodgins Avenue.
The officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the driver allegedly struck the police vehicle and two other parked cars, while attempting to flee. The BMW then hit a third civilian vehicle before coming to a rest against a light pole.
"The driver was safely taken into police custody and transported to hospital to be treated for minor injuries," Const. Bradley Holditch, media relations officer with Upper Fraser Valley Regional Detachment stated in a press release later that same morning.
No police officers or members of the public were injured.
The man is being held in police custody for a bail hearing, and charges of assault of a peace officer, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, flight from police and impaired operation will be recommended.
鈥淭his incident demonstrates the hard work of front-line officers, their high visibility in the community and their efforts to reduce crime and ensure public safety," Holditch said. "It showcases the dangers of police work, particularly when initiating traffic stops and officers鈥 ability to work under high stress and harmful situations, bringing incidents to a safe conclusion.鈥
The road was closed at Hodgins Avenue for several hours, with the crash site north of Hodgins, but had re-opened by 8 a.m.
