B.C. police watchdog is investigating after a man died while in a Vancouver Police Department jail cell.
Vancouver police notified the Independent Investigations Office of B.C. that shortly before 10 a.m. on Wednesday (July 16), a 49-year-old man became unresponsive "after suffering an apparent medical emergency inside the jail," the department said in a news release Thursday. The man received medical attention while at the jail and was transported to hospital where he died.
The Independent Investigations Office said that in information provided to the watchdog, officers arrested the man around 4 a.m. and transported him to the jail around 4:30 a.m.
