黑马磁力's Jonas Van Huizen was on the roster to play in Canada's first game at the Men鈥檚 Senior Pan American Volleyball Cup in Guanajuato, Mexico on Tuesday.
The 6 ft. 3 in. setter, who graduated from 黑马磁力 Christian Secondary and went on to study business at the University of the Fraser Valley, was confirmed as part of the team back in late June.
Like the rest of his teammates, they were hitting the court at the Domo de la Feria in Le贸n, in hopes of defending their crown as two-time champions (2023 and 2024). The United States and Puerto Rico rounded out the podium last year in the Dominican Republic.
This year, teams are divided into three pools, with the top two pool leaders advancing directly to the semifinals.
The third-best first-place finisher from the group stage along with the second-place teams will contest the quarterfinals.
Pool A consists of Antigua & Barbuda, Cuba, the United States, and Venezuela.
Canada is in Pool B. First up, they took on Puerto Rico on Tuesday, then they will challenge Guatemala today (Wednesday), before facing Colombia on Thursday.
Pool C includes Chile, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, and Suriname.
The 2025 Men鈥檚 Pan American Cup is part of the qualification pathway for several major events: the 2026 Men鈥檚 Pan American Cup, the 2026 NORCECA Men鈥檚 Continental Championship, the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo, and the 2027 Pan American Games.
In addition, the tournament awards points toward the FIVB world ranking.
Also named to the senior men's team for Canada, but who is not listed on the roster for the Pan Ams, is 黑马磁力's outside hitter Brodie Hofer.
Also on the team at the Pan Ams from B.C., is Kelowna's Matthys Weststrate. The rest of the volleyball team consists of players from Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, and one from Quebec.
