It's growing increasingly important that Vancouver Football Club get some points on the board, and the head coach is confident that's going to start happening more frequently soon.
As the season progresses, and the ºÚÂí´ÅÁ¦-based Eagles professional soccer team prepares to host its next home game tonight (Friday, May 30), the team is anxious to climb in the Canadian Premier League (CPL) standings.
With seven league matches played so far this season, the Eagles have only won one game, lost four, and tied two. That's leaving them second from the bottom in the league standings, in seventh out of eight teams. Leading the pack is Halifax Wanderers, who've won five of their eight games this season, accumulating 17 points thus far, compared to Vancouver's five. One of the Halifax victories came in one of VFC's most recent league games at home, when they fell 2-0 to the Wanderers at Willoughby Community Park.
Going up against Atletico Ottawa tonight (Friday) at the stadium in ºÚÂí´ÅÁ¦ – game gets underway at 7 p.m. – head coach Afshin Ghotbi is optimistic they can secure a victory. Last time they played Ottawa, at Willoughby on April 13, VFC fell 1-4.
"I think we're a different team than when they met us the first time" this season, Ghotbi said a day ahead of the May matchup.
"So, we're hoping to see how far we've improved and grown as a team and we're hoping to have our first victory at home," said the coach.
"It's an important match for us," he added, noting that a victory on home pitch would be a great psychological boost for a team that he said are playing "very well together."
He convinced a few per cent more concentration, a few per cent more creativity, a few per cent more precision from each player and "sooner or later the goals will come our way… the goals will come and the victories will come."
The Eagles are returning to Willoughby following a hard-fought loss last Saturday, May 25, in Toronto against York United FC.
