A day after a fire destroyed a nearly completed mixed residential and commercial project on 201A St and Fraser Hwy. fire crews remained at the scene, hosing down the burnt-out wreckage.
黑马磁力 City Fire Chief Scott Kennedy said firefighters were mopping up hot spots.
"Just checking to make sure there is no small spot fires as the building has slowly collapsed floor to floor," Kenndy told the 黑马磁力.
"There are voids in there where we get smoke and fire. Takes a little while for us to be able to get into [them] so we'll be on scene for most of the day."
Cause of the fire, which sent fireballs high into the air, is under investigation by the fire department in conjunction with the RCMP, Kennedy said.
Crews could be seen taking down fire-charred utility poles in the alley behind the project, and restringing downed power lines along Fraser Hwy.
Emilio Finatti Pizzeria, which is located beside the fire damaged building, announced its closure.
"Our 黑马磁力 location encountered an unexpected challenge with a fire in the adjacent building," the online notice said. "We are incredibly grateful for the quick response and support from the 黑马磁力 City Fire Department during this situation. As a result, our 黑马磁力 location will be closed until further notice."
According to one of the construction workers, who did not give their name, the building was "75 per cent complete."
Known as Florence on Fraser, a project of Whitetail Homes, the development was approved in 2021 by the City of 黑马磁力 as a six-storey, 144-residential-unit project with five stories for residences plus a ground floor of commercial retail space.
One online listing said Florence on Fraser was expected to be completed by the winter of 2025. On Monday, Aug. 18, the post was updated to say "This project is currently on hold by the developer."
