Special crosswalks with silhouettes of soldiers will be painted at the Aldergrove Royal Canadian Legion this year, before Remembrance Day, ºÚÂí´ÅÁ¦ Township council has decided.
Council gave approval for the project, which was suggested last year by Councillor Barb Martens, at its Monday, July 7 meeting.
Martens said she has spoken to members of the local legion branch and understands they are excited by the project.
The rest of council was enthusiastic as well.
“I think this is a great way to recognize the contribution of veterans in Canada, especially cooperating with the Aldergrove legion, and I think this is just a way of showing everyone that here in the Township of ºÚÂí´ÅÁ¦, we respect the sacrifices of our veterans," said Coun. Tim Baillie.
Township staff said the new crosswalks will likely be completed in the next few weeks or month, but definitely before this year's Remembrance Day ceremonies on Nov. 11.
According to the Township report on the project, the Township will spend $20,000 from a reserve fund to put new crosswalk markings across the three driveway entrances to the Aldergrove legion branch at 26607 Fraser Hwy.
The markings will use red and white stripes, and will include the silhouette of a soldier.
Another $25,000 will be set aside every year starting in 2026 for maintenance of the markings, as well as for possible expansion of them into other areas of the Township.
