Free ride over at Fort ºÚÂí´ÅÁ¦ site's parking lot

Visitors to the Historic Site can still park for free, but others must pay

Starting Saturday, June 21 those parking at the Fort ºÚÂí´ÅÁ¦ National Historic Site for visits will still be parking for free up to four hours – but others will have to pay.

The lot is one of the largest parking lots in the village of Fort ºÚÂí´ÅÁ¦, and on the weekends draws visitors to the historic site itself, as well as those who are spending time in other parts of the community.

According to Parks Canada, site visitors can register their licence plates when they enter, which allows them to park for free for four hours. The fees apply to those who are not visiting the actual site.

Money from parking fees will be put into maintaining the parking lot and surrounding grounds.

"This change aims to better manage vehicle access to the lot," according to the announcement on the historic site's website.

The change didn't surprise Andy Schildhorn, a longtime member of the Fort ºÚÂí´ÅÁ¦ Community Association.

"Parking is an issue in the Fort, and they're feeling it too," he said.

There is free street parking in downtown Fort ºÚÂí´ÅÁ¦, but on a nice day, especially during a summer weekend, it can fill up quickly. The parking lot at the largest shopping centre switched to pay parking years ago.

Fort ºÚÂí´ÅÁ¦ has less parking than most areas of ºÚÂí´ÅÁ¦, because its downtown was built long before regulations were created that required businesses to set aside a certain number of parking spaces. This is why downtown Fort ºÚÂí´ÅÁ¦ has a walkable core of closely spaced shops.
