Moments after passing under this sign on Highway 1 in Surrey saying "BC Hwy Patrol Ahead. Drive Safe" a prohibited driver is stopped for speeding while using his cell phone.

Police say a driver on Highway 1 in Surrey was stopped for speeding while on his cell phone shortly after passing underneath a traffic display sign that warned "BC Highway Patrol Ahead Drive Safe."

It earned him $673 in fines and getting his car impounded for seven days.

"Astute motorists are noticing that oversized highway signs are now warning drivers that BC Highway Patrol is on the prowl for unsafe driving," said Corporal Michael McLaughlin of the RCMP BC Highway Patrol. "A less astute motorist has lost his vehicle after speeding under one of those signs, while allegedly on his cell phone, in front of BC Highway Patrol."

This was on June 28 at 4:30 p.m. McLaughlin said the westbound Mercedes sedan, driven by a 19-year-old Coquitlam, was going 134 km/h in a 100 zone. The driver, whose name police have not released, was ticketed for speeding against a highway sign to the tune of $196, fined $109 for driving a defective vehicle, and also fined $368 for using an electronic device while driving,

"Sometimes life gives you a sign," McLaughlin observed. "Make an effort to slow down and enjoy the drive. You might avoid getting ticketed and towed."
