The forecast of a dangerous wildfire season has shut down fireworks for Canada Day in Harrison Hot Springs.

Coun. Leo Facio, who is on the village鈥檚 Canada Day planning committee, announced that the fireworks have been cancelled 鈥渄ue to some obvious reasons.鈥

鈥淲e鈥檙e looking at maybe something different,鈥 Facio said. 鈥淲e will wait and see.鈥

Category 2 and 3 burns are banned across the Coastal Fire Centre and in the District of Kent, though campfires are allowed with a permit in the district.

Fireworks were also cancelled in Harrison Hot Springs last year to prevent potential wildfires.

Facio highlighted the upcoming pet parade, which is a hit with residents and visitors alike each year.

This year marks the 11th annual Canada Day Pet Parade for the village. This year鈥檚 theme is 鈥淕arden Gnomes of Canada.鈥 Pre-registration for the pet parade is available up until June 25 and can be emailed to canadadaypetparade@gmail.com. The first 50 pets to register will be entered in to a prize draw. There is no cost to register.

Check-in will be at 10 a.m. with the parade beginning at the St. Alice Hall at 10:30 a.m.

Even if the fireworks are not happening again this year, there should be no shortage of entertainment and celebration. Stay connected to The Observer to learn more about upcoming events.
