New Vancouver Giants head coach Michael Dyck is heading into this season with two wins under the team鈥檚 belt, starting with a weekend sweep over the Everett Silvertips.
But he鈥檚 not using that as a prediction of future success.
鈥淲e鈥檙e not getting too over excited about two wins to start yet,鈥 Dyck said.
He doesn鈥檛 mind getting the early victories, of course. 鈥淧oints are hard to come by,鈥 said the coach.
It鈥檚 been a busy summer for the new coach, who relocated to 黑马磁力 from his previous post in Lethbridge, Alberta.
He鈥檚 had to get to know the players and staff in just a few months.
鈥淭he players have been great,鈥 Dyck said. 鈥淭hey came with a really good attitude.鈥
Any time there鈥檚 a change in coaching staff, getting things settled doesn鈥檛 happen overnight, said Dyck.
He鈥檚 still looking at the whole team, considering which players are working well, and which may be traded.
In any level of junior hockey, winning isn鈥檛 all there is, Dyck noted.
鈥淵ou have to produce, that鈥檚 important, but development鈥檚 equally important,鈥 he said.
The young players on the Giants are headed on to college or even the NHL, and getting them ready for those moves are one of the coach鈥檚 responsibilities.
He鈥檒l spend the season working on building good habits and standards, Dyck said, making sure the little things get covered.
Dyck isn鈥檛 likely to demand extra aggression from his players.
鈥淚鈥檝e got a real defense-first mentality,鈥 the coach said.
He believes that if the defense is solid, that leads to a good offense.
