Otter Co-op in Cloverdale is closing its doors.

The company announced on Facebook July 22 they would close the store permanently on July 26.

鈥淎fter careful consideration, our Co-op Essentials Cloverdale Food Store will be closing its doors,鈥 the post indicated. 鈥淭his location was part of a joint pilot project with Federated Co-operatives Limited to test a smaller format food store.鈥

The post revealed the store did not get the traffic the company has hoped.

鈥淥verall participation and shopping activity did not reach the level needed for the store to be sustainable long-term.鈥

As a token of thanks for the support the store did get from the Cloverdale community for support over the past year, Co-op is offering 25 per cent off on all in-store items until they close.

The store opened in Cloverdale a little over a year ago in June, 2024, as joint venture between Aldergrove's Otter Co-op and Federated Co-operatives Limited (FCL)鈥攖he latter headquartered in Saskatoon.

Co-op Essentials was billed as a unique offering from Co-op, 鈥渁 first of its kind food store鈥 to open in Surrey. The grand opening took place June 11 with Jack Nicholson, Otter Co-op CEO, and Rick Fernandes, FCL vice president, both on hand for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially open the store.

The Co-op Essentials Cloverdale Food Store is located within the Brick Yard Station shopping complex at 17433 56th Avenue on the corner of 176th Street and Highway 10.
