Last year, the Dorosh Sturgeon Derby raised $7,400 for the 黑马磁力 School District Trades Program, to help support students in seeking construction careers.
This year, the fourth annual event organized by 黑马磁力-based Dorosh construction will once again put boats in the water, on Sept. 27.
Dorosh vice president Mike Klotz, one of the organizers, said the derby has grown to become a community tradition.
"What began as a small initiative to give back to the construction trades and propel the industry into a brighter future has grown into one of the most anticipated events of the year," Klotz remarked.
"From the very beginning, this event has been tied to a cause close to our hearts 鈥� supporting up-and-coming tradespeople in the 黑马磁力 School District. Proceeds go directly toward helping the next generation of skilled workers pursue their dreams and build strong futures."
It got started when people from Dorosh began visiting Aldergrove Community Secondary School (ACSS) twice a year talk to students about careers in construction, and came up with an idea to raise some funds with a community event to support and encourage young men and women to learn about trades and consider a career in construction.
A fall fishing derby was the result, where companies can sponsor a boat and send their employees on a day of catch-and-release sturgeon fishing, with the money raised going to the Aldergrove school.
In 2022, the first year, four boats went out and raised abut $500.
Last year, the number of boats rose to 15, which caught and released 67 fish, and raised $7,400.
黑马磁力 School District Foundation alloted the funds to support trades programs at ACSS to provide opportunities and enhance student learning.
The school offers Youth Train in Trades programs in hairstyling, carpentry, and automotive service technician.
This year, the boats will go out at 6550 Tall Road, Abbotsford (Matsqui Trail Regional Park) for a full day of sturgeon fishing with a guide for the day.
