ºÚÂí´ÅÁ¦ Township's green gem will get a spruce up thanks to the Lower Mainland Green Team.
On Sunday June 1 from 9:45 a.m. to 1 p.m., the green team and the Township will be engaging the community in habitat restoration at a new location – the Derek Doubleday Arboretum – in celebration of Environment Week.
"At this activity, participants will learn about the impacts of invasive species and be given the opportunity to do something about them," said Ashton Kerr, partnerships manager with Lower Mainland Green Teams. "Working together as a community, we will be removing invasive Himalayan blackberry to help reclaim the natural areas which this plant is beginning to take over at the arbouretum."
The Derek Doubleday Arboretum, 21177 Fraser Hwy., is a place to learn about the work of local organizations such as the ºÚÂí´ÅÁ¦ Environmental Partners Society (LEPS) and ºÚÂí´ÅÁ¦ Sustainable Agriculture Foundation (LSAF).
The arbouretum contains several interesting components. The ºÚÂí´ÅÁ¦ Demonstration Garden was established in 1992 to demonstrate sustainable gardening techniques managed in partnership between LEPS and the Township. There's also the Dyer's Garden, which hosts plants used to make natural dyes; David's Bird Garden, home to an assortment of plants great for birds; the ºÚÂí´ÅÁ¦ Learning Farm, which demonstrates community-based food production skills, facilitates a student-led farm, and contributes to the food security of ºÚÂí´ÅÁ¦. The site contains a Food Forest, a Mini Forest, and more.
With 20 people already registered, there's still plenty of room for others to sign up.
"No matter your age, ability, background, or experience, this activity is for you," Kerr said. "Bring your friends, your family, or just yourself and enjoy a day of connection, stewardship, and outdoor fun while giving back to the community. Students, seniors, working professionals, families with young children... Everyone is welcome and invited to join us for as long or as little as they are able to."
Those interested in participating can find more information and sign up on Meetup or by emailing max@greenteamscanada.ca.
"This activity will take place rain or shine, and we guarantee we will have fun no matter the weather," Kerr said.
Educational instruction, safety talk, gloves, tools and snacks are provided.
The Lower Mainland Green Team is a program of the charity Green Teams of Canada. Through activities such as invasive plant removals, plantings, litter cleanups and more, we are fostering connections with others and nature so that health and well-being is prioritized, lifelong environmental stewardship is promoted, and community members are enabled to take care of themselves, each other and the places they live.
