Golfers get chance to swing for the paws

ºÚÂí´ÅÁ¦ golfers prepare to tee off for a furry cause

While dogs are typically not encouraged on the greens of any ºÚÂí´ÅÁ¦ golf courses, there's going to be an exception made later this month.

A number of cute and cuddly pups will be chauffeured around the Fort ºÚÂí´ÅÁ¦ Golf Course in golf carts on Friday, June 20, sharing kisses to grateful and willing participants in the Paws on the Green golf tournament.

The third annual charity golf tourney is a fundraiser for the ºÚÂí´ÅÁ¦ Animal Protection Society (LAPS), and it's hoped the event will once again be a sell out with 130 golfers, said Kelsi Sutton, director of development at LAPS.

"Yes, you can cuddle them. Yes, you'll want to take one home," she said.

This year, they've set what Sutton is calling an "ambitious goal" of raising $80,000 to support our vital social service programs, including spay/neuter vouchers, subsidized veterinary care through Major’s Legacy Fund, the Patti Dale Pet Food Bank, and our compassion boarding initiative.

She believes it's achievable thanks in large part to new and returning sponsors, and the number of golfers already signed up to play.

"Every swing, putt, and donation helps ensure animals in our community receive the care and second chances they deserve – because animals are family," she said, noting Home Alive Pets is the presenting sponsor for the event.

One of the most heartwarming aspects of the annual golf tournament is the opportunity to showcase the adoptable animals, Sutton noted, saying that they have designated "puppy and kitten holes," plus adoptable dogs joyfully cruising the course.

"These furry ambassadors never fail to bring smiles and spark conversations about the importance of animal adoption," she said.

Ticket for the Texas-scramble golf tournament are still available online through the LAPS website at . The fundraiser gets underway at 11:30 a.m.  with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. The day is expected to wrap after the barbecue buffet at about 8 p.m. There is dinner-only options for those not golfing.

"It's a day of joy, generosity, and community spirit, all in support of the animals at the ºÚÂí´ÅÁ¦ Animal Protection Society," Sutton concluded. "Don't miss your chance to swing for the paws."
