Being safe and being prepared in case of emergency is imperative, as many of the natural disasters happening around the world shows.

It’s part of the motivation behind a safety event held this past Sunday at Willougbby Town Centre.

The Sept. 10 event was open to residents and retail tenants in and around the ºÚÂí´ÅÁ¦ mall, but it was also open to the general public, explained Erinpatrick Williams from Phoenix Fire Life Safety.

The ºÚÂí´ÅÁ¦ company hosted the event and partnered with a number of other businesses in the safety industry. The festival, which attracted upwards of 70 people, offered hands-on training with fire extinguishers and Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs), a how-to for CPR, and information from a series of safety stations.

It was a free event, including a free barbecue, Williams said. But donations were collected for the BC Professional Fire Fighters Burn Fund, as well as GlobalFire, a charity that helps firefighters and paramedics in developing countries.

The event raised $225 that was shared between the two charities.

There are a few members of GlobalFire from ºÚÂí´ÅÁ¦, including Burnaby firefighter Erik Vogel, in attendance. Vogel said he and members of the GlobalFire team are set to head to Nicaragua – a 7,000-kilometre trek – in early October to deliver an ambulance and other used firefighting and rescue gear to Chinandega as part of Operation Nicaragua.
